Robert Klein, DO

I was born in the northwest corner of Iowa in Sioux Center in 1957. While being raised on a farm near there, I graduated from Sioux Center Christian school in 1971 and from Unity Christian High in Orange City in 1975. I was a biology major and graduated from Dordt College in my hometown in 1979. Graduation from Des Moines University, College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, with the medical degree, Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) was in 1983. I completed my rotating internship at Davenport Osteopathic Hospital in Davenport, Iowa in 1984. I maintained a full family practice in Grundy Center and Wellsburg, Iowa, for two years and also until 1989, North of Spokane, Washington, in the town of Deer Park. These first two practice locations involved seeing patients in the clinic, assisting in surgery, hospital rounds, delivering babies, covering the emergency room, house calls, nursing home rounds, county coroner duties, preparing medical educational lectures for various audiences, etc. Then I practiced at the OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment) Department of Eastmoreland Hospital in Portland, Oregon, until moving back to Iowa in the Fall of 1992. Starting then, I have had an office only practice and no longer work in hospitals at all. I continue doing only OMT in Iowa like I had done in Oregon, and maintain my licenses to practice in both states. Over the years, my practice techniques slowly evolved from the more forceful to the very gentle. This was because the more gentle techniques seemed to be more effective and actually helped a higher percentage of patients improve more rapidly and more thoroughly.

I have been married since 1980, and our two daughters are successfully pursuing their educational and vocational careers. My wife has helped at various schools as a volunteer or as an employee for more than two decades now. We have all been involved in church and community for many years. After the severe flooding here in June of 2008, we volunteered with the Salvation Army helping with food and water distribution and also helped clean out flooded homes and businesses with the Hands On Disaster Response team. I continue to enjoy bicycling for my health and "green" lifestyle. Most of the time, I succeed at being "Mr. Fixit" at home, and also enjoy doing some woodworking and welding. In the future, I hope to be an artist blacksmith. I have dabbled at playing piano and writing poetry and am not very good at either one.
